For our first edition we worked in studio with Jacopo for more than 2 months.
The idea was trying to combine his style with classical printing techniques but with a new, fresh approach.
We tested different materials and times in acid baths, sometimes for more than one day. We produced so many metal plates that later was difficult to choose the right one to print.
Once we found it we tried different kind of printing papers and different chine-collé solutions, ending up with the crazy idea of covering in gold leaf all the paper for this edition.
We also tried some variants, inking the plate in black or printing the etching dry on very heavy white paper, but the gold leaf version really had something more.So we happily spent 3 weeks applying gold leaf in the right way, manually & sheet by sheet, then we printed that paper dry, without using any inks: the result is something hard to understand only by pictures.
This 600 gr Zerkall paper covered in gold leaf has just the right touch and lines of 2501’s drawing printed on it, reflecting every second different lights, really come to life. Here you can see the result.
